Bloat In Collies
Bloat CAN be found in lines (genetic) AND it can occur as a random event. Either way, it is devastating and heartbreaking, and every preventative measure should be taken to keep it from occurring. While we do not breed dogs with a genetic history of bloat, there is NO guarantee that it will never happen.
We encourage every dog parent to obtain and learn to use an emergency kit (available from the Collie Health Foundation or make your own) and become aware of the signs and symptoms. Following the steps below may prevent the possible occurrence of bloat/GCV:
1. Food: AVOID feeding dry food and pre-soak food in water for several minutes before feeding your collie.
2. Supplements: Probiotics and enzymes enable your collie to digest their food.
3. Feeding Schedule: Feed your collie smaller portions on a regular basis rather than one large meal once a day. Consider using a "slow feeder" - a bowl that slows down an eater that tends to gulp their food.
4. Exercise: Do not let your collie run right before or right after a meal.
"Bloat is caused by a rapid accumulation of gas in the stomach. The stomach expands to its maximum capacity then may twist if the pressure is not relieved. The expanded stomach compresses vital organs causing shock, and if not treated the dog usually dies."
